Who doesn’t want to be a part of a fun team? When people have a great time together, they are more creative and far more productive. In fact, the team mission isn’t work any more, it’s play!
How do you build a FUN team? You stop looking for people who are exactly like you!
Think how boring life would be if you lived with yourself – no unique ideas of what to do on the weekends, no fascinating insightful conversations, no one to challenge you to do or be something greater. GAG! It might be peaceful for a day or two but after that you’d die of boredom! Can you imagine a team meeting with a roomful of YOUs? You’d all dive for the same jelly donut!
If you want a FUN team, one that wins, just remember how you used to choose players for pickup games as a kid. You pick someone who can really run, so they can get the ball down the field. And you need someone that runner can pass to who can dead eye shoot a goal. You pick some slower, more formidable people to hang back and defend your end zone, and of course someone who has quick reflexes to defend your goal. You don’t even care if they can run!
A great team is made up of people with different talents all working toward the same objective. But that’s not all. For it to REALLY be effective, pay attention to personality types too. Everyone can’t be the outgoing talkers or no idea ever gets heard. Those wily quiet ones are insightful. They process all the ideas on the table and come up with incredible observations. The skeptical types keep you from making costly mistakes and then there are the ones that keep everyone working in harmony. With that kind of diversity, you need the peacemakers too!
Blend talent and personality and you have a great team. Instead of fighting the differences, as their leader go out of your way to appreciate the contributions they make and your team will too. You will transform your group into a creative, kick-butt, FUN family.
Who’s on your team? Take a look and check what talent and personalities are working with and write in the comments below how many YOUs you counted. Who are you missing?
